Audiovisual Manager (Starting in June 2026)

Purpose of the Role

The Audiovisual Manager’s primary purpose is to provide outstanding customer service and technical support in response to AV-related requests and production needs. This role oversees the operation and administration of Audio Visual systems, theatres, multi-purpose performance spaces, studios, and event venues across both Primary and Secondary campuses, ensuring high-quality production delivery, safety, and the continuity of technical standards.

The role leads the technical and AV aspects of school productions and major events, supporting the full event lifecycle from planning and rehearsals through to live technical delivery and post-event review. Artistic direction and performance leadership sit with teaching staff and event directors; this role ensures that all technical operations are safe, coordinated, and professionally executed in support of those aims.

The Audiovisual Manager also leads, supervises, and develops the school's two AV Technicians, ensuring consistency in workflow, standard operating procedures, equipment management, and service excellence across campuses. The role will also play a key part in the opening, operational design and future management of the new auditorium in August 2026.

Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities:

This is a strategically focused role that will involve working closely with the Head of Music, Drama, Directors of Marketing, Section Heads, and Event Leads. The Audiovisual Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of day-to-day management across two campuses, whilst ensuring that all staff follow organisational guidelines and procedures and provide excellent-quality care to students.

Key Responsibilities

1. Production Management, Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead end-to-end production planning for shows, musicals, concerts, drama assessments, assemblies and whole-school events.
  • Develop and manage production schedules, cue sheets, technical plans, and operational backstage procedures across both campuses.
  • Provide professional supervision and ongoing coaching to AV Technicians to ensure efficient task allocation, workflow consistency and technical excellence.
  • Coordinate with teachers, show directors, event leads to ensure smooth communication and a unified production vision.
  • Uphold best-practice stage management standards, including cue calling, scene transitions, prompt book management and backstage communication systems.
2. Rehearsal & Performance Support
  • Prepare rehearsal and performance spaces for safety, readiness and technical configuration.
  • Lead technical backstage operations during performances, including AV cue execution, communication systems, real-time technical decision making, and contingency management..
  • Provide technical supervision of backstage areas to ensure safe use of equipment, compliance with safety protocols, and appropriate access around rigging, cabling, and technical infrastructure.
3. Student Training and Development 
  • Design and lead backstage training in consultation with the senior leadership team for students, including stagecraft, technical theatre literacy, cue calling, prop and set management, lighting/sound operation and professional theatre etiquette.
  • Mentor and manage student technical crews during productions, fostering teamwork, accountability, problem-solving skills and leadership capacity.
  • Support teacher-led learning in Music, Theatre and Arts by providing technical knowledge, practical demonstrations and performance-based learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with sections to develop a student talent pipeline capable of supporting future productions and operating as a certified school crew team.
4. Production Innovation & Technical Leadership
  • Manage and maintain AV systems, lighting rigs, sound equipment, wireless systems, projection technologies and stage hardware across both campuses.
  • Maintain equipment inventory, asset logging, maintenance cycles, replacement planning and resource allocation.
  • Research and introduce innovative technical solutions to improve production capability, acoustics, staging design and visual experience.
  • Lead technical support for assemblies, graduations, exhibitions, ceremonies, conferences and school-wide community events.
5. Health, Safety, Risk & Compliance
  • Establish, enforce, and routinely review theatre safety procedures, backstage protocols, and hazard-prevention measures.
  • Conduct and document risk assessments for staging, rigging, set construction, live sound, lighting, power/electrical distribution and special effects.
  • Ensure compliance with fire codes, crowd management, equipment safety standards, emergency evacuation routes, and accessibility requirements.
  • Maintain safe storage and handling of props, tools, power equipment, ladders, rigging, cables, and stage infrastructure.
  • Train staff and student crew in emergency response, safe equipment operation and high-risk scenarios (lifting, wiring, flight bars, machinery use, etc.).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Stage Management, Technical Theatre, Performing Arts, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in venue management and technical theatre, ideally with leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience managing technical staff, AV teams, or theatre venues is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in school, youth theatre, or educational environments is desirable.
  • Ability to work across multiple performance spaces and manage a large performance venue.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Deep knowledge of stage management, theatre operations, production workflows, and safety standards.
  • Proficiency in lighting and sound systems, AV technologies, communication systems, and theatre equipment.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills; able to manage multiple productions and events simultaneously.
  • Effective leadership and mentoring skills for guiding AV Technicians and student crews.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across diverse teams.
  • Ability to stay calm, resourceful, and focused during live events and tight timelines.
