Maternity Cover Science Laboratory Technician
About this position
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Science team as a Maternity Cover Science Laboratory Technician. The role is a one-year fixed-term position, running from April 2026 to March 2027, and offers the chance to make a meaningful contribution to teaching and learning within a supportive and collaborative environment.
Primary purpose
To ensure that Science laboratories and equipment are suitable to support teaching and learning. This person will provide technician support on the use of specialised scientific equipment and have the required skills and knowledge to maintain a safe environment for science classes.
The technician will also be responsible for keeping an up to date inventory of chemicals and equipment, along with possessing the requisite knowledge on how to safely handle and store chemicals. An understanding of health and safety regulations in the workplace is a requirement for the person wishing to apply for this role..

- Have a productive and cooperative relationship with Science teachers, other Science Laboratory Technicians, and external suppliers and vendors.

Major Specific duties
1. Curriculum Support
- Provide teachers with safe, clean apparatus, fully operational equipment as requested for lessons
- Assist Science teachers and students in practical lessons and investigations.
- Help to spread best practices across the department by advising on the most suitable equipment and investigations based on experience and materials available.
- Create and maintain systems to ensure equipment is utilised in the most effective way possible.
- Work with the Head of Department (HOD) and Assistant Head of Department (AHOD) to develop practical investigations and the practicals in schemes of learning.
2. Maintenance of a Safe Working Environment
- Ensure that laboratories and science equipment are safe and functional.
- Monitor stocks of chemicals and equipment source replacements as required.
- Alert the HOD to any potential health and safety hazards with practicals, equipment or chemical storage.
- Undertaking duties as the Line Manager may reasonably request.

Qualification and Experience
- Relevant science qualification or equivalent laboratory experience.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment, including safe handling and storage of chemicals.
- Good understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Ability to prepare, maintain, and organise laboratory equipment for teaching and learning.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, technicians, and other colleagues.
- Clear communication skills and a professional, positive attitude.
