Design Lab Technician (Full-time)
Overview
The Design Lab Technician plays a vital role in supporting the Design Department's teaching and learning objectives through three key areas:
- Managing and maintaining workshop equipment and facilities to ensure optimal functionality and safety
- Providing support to students and teachers during practical sessions
- Coordinating resources, materials, and administrative tasks to facilitate smooth departmental operations
The position requires a detail-oriented individual who can effectively balance daily technical operations with long-term maintenance planning while supporting the department's educational goals.

Responsibilities
Daily Operations
- Coordinate with Head of Department and teachers regarding daily lesson requirements
- Monitor and maintain equipment (including laser cutters, 3D printers, sanders)
- Prepare tools and materials for lessons
- Assist students with equipment use and provide technical guidance
- Manage tool organization and cleaning
- Review and process laser cutting and 3D printing requests
- Support VEX robotics activities
Periodic Responsibilities
Weekly
- Organize material inventory (cardboard, wood, acrylic, etc.)
- Assess and prepare materials for upcoming projects
- Conduct equipment maintenance and testing
Monthly
- Test new materials for future projects
- Update department storage systems
- Conduct risk assessments and documentation
- Maintain student work displays
Quarterly
- Maintain sewing machines and heat presses
- Service and lubricate power tools
- Conduct inventory checks
- Empty extraction systems
Annually
- Complete annual health and safety audits
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and warranty renewals
- Assist in planning material procurement for the next academic year
Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to safety protocols
- Implement risk assessments
- Assist in emergency evacuations and equipment shutdown
- Maintain regular safety checks and documentation
Other Responsibilities
- Research and place orders for materials and supplies
- Optimize printing schedules and material usage
- Support curriculum-based resource management
- Maintain chemical cabinets and storage areas
- Participate in department planning meetings
- Any other job tasks related to the teaching and learning of the department and the school
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Design Technology, Engineering, Industrial Arts, or related technical field
- For senior applicants: 2-3 years of experience in a similar technical role, preferably in an educational setting
- For junior applicants: Recent graduates with relevant internship or project experience will be considered
- Fresh graduates with strong technical aptitude and willingness to learn are welcome to apply
